North Carolina Teachers Mistakenly Given Bonuses Asked to Return Funds
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District is working closely with the affected teachers to rectify the error.
- 225 high school English teachers in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District in North Carolina received a $1,250 recruitment bonus in error on January 12, 2024.
- The bonus was intended for new teachers hired in areas experiencing a critical teacher shortage, but the teachers who received it were not new hires.
- In addition to the recruitment bonus, the teachers also received a $200 monthly retention bonus in error.
- The district's compensation department discovered the mistake on January 17, 2024, and notified the affected teachers the next day.
- Teachers who were overpaid have the option of repaying the bonus in a lump sum from their February paycheck or over the next three months through deductions from their checks.
