North Carolina Officer Fatally Shot Responding to Grocery Store Gunman

Officer Michael Horan was killed while responding to a report of an armed man at a Greensboro Food Lion; the suspect was apprehended after a high-speed chase.

Michael Horan, a Greensboro police officer and former U.S. Coast Guard member, was killed on December 23, 2024, while responding to a report of an armed man inside a Food Lion grocery store.
The suspect, identified as 34-year-old Tarrell Isaac McMillian, fled the scene and was arrested two hours later following a high-speed chase on Interstate 40.
Horan was shot after a brief struggle and did not have time to draw his weapon; no other injuries were reported during the incident.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation, and the Food Lion store remains closed as authorities continue their work.
Horan, remembered as a dedicated officer, husband, and father, had served with the Greensboro Police Department since 2018 and received a lifesaving award in 2019 for rescuing two people from rip currents.
