North Carolina Mother Charged After Second Infant Dies in Co-Sleeping Incident

Mackenzie Katlyn Reed faces charges of involuntary manslaughter and child abuse following the death of her 7-week-old son, marking the second such tragedy in her family.

Mackenzie Katlyn Reed, a 24-year-old mother from North Carolina, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and child abuse after her 7-week-old son, Zhen, died during a co-sleeping incident.
The tragic event occurred in October 2023, a year after another of Reed's children died under similar circumstances.
An autopsy revealed that Zhen died from asphyxia due to an unsafe sleep environment, compounded by a common cold infection.
Reed allegedly used THC products on the day of the incident, according to police reports.
Reed is currently being held on a $500,000 secured bond.
