North Carolina Man Sentenced to Over Three Years for Assaulting Police During Jan. 6 Capitol Riot

Brett Alan Rotella, 35, was convicted of multiple felonies, including assaulting law enforcement and obstructing officers, for his actions during the 2021 Capitol breach.

• Brett Alan Rotella, also known as Brett Ostrander, was sentenced to 38 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, and ordered to pay $2,000 in restitution.
• Rotella was found guilty of three felony charges, including assaulting law enforcement and obstructing officers during a civil disorder, as well as several misdemeanors.
• During the Capitol riot, Rotella led a group of rioters, used a pole and a ladder against police, and participated in coordinated efforts to breach police lines in the Lower West Terrace Tunnel.
• Rotella's actions were captured on police body cameras and CCTV, showing him directing rioters, smashing glass, and physically engaging with officers despite the use of chemical deterrents.
• The Justice Department has charged over 1,572 individuals in connection with the Capitol breach, with investigations into the events of January 6, 2021, still ongoing.
