North Carolina Inmate Escapes Jail Through Ventilation System

John Matthew Nigh, held on attempted murder charges, is the subject of a statewide manhunt after fleeing Craven County Jail with assistance from his cellmates.

John Matthew Nigh, 37, escaped Craven County Jail on Sunday by removing a ceiling grating and exiting through a ventilation housing on the roof.
Nigh's cellmates aided his escape by stuffing a mattress to make it appear he was still in his cell, authorities said.
Nigh has a history of violent encounters with law enforcement, including an incident in June 2024 where he allegedly fired at deputies in Onslow County while evading arrest.
He was being held on multiple charges, including three counts of attempted first-degree murder, assault on law enforcement, and firearm possession by a felon.
The U.S. Marshals Service and local law enforcement are actively pursuing Nigh, who is considered armed and dangerous.
