North Carolina Elections Chair Charged Over Alleged Drugging of Granddaughters’ Ice Cream

The state auditor has urged his resignation, with a removal request planned before the elections board.

Overview

  • Wilmington police say surveillance video shows James Edwin Yokeley Jr. placing pills into Dairy Queen Blizzards after he flagged down an officer to report the discovery.
  • Preliminary field tests indicated the pills were MDMA and cocaine, and samples have been sent to a state laboratory for confirmation.
  • Yokeley is charged with two counts of contaminating food or drink with a controlled substance, felony child abuse, and felony possession of a Schedule I narcotic.
  • He was arrested on Aug. 26, posted a $100,000 secured bond, appeared in court, was ordered to have no contact with the grandchildren, and is due back on Sept. 11.
  • State and Surry County election officials say they are monitoring the case, and State Auditor Dave Boliek has called for Yokeley’s resignation and intends to seek his removal at an emergency meeting Thursday.
