North America’s First Hydrogen Passenger Train Enters Service on San Bernardino’s Arrow Line

SBCTA is piloting a Stadler fuel‑cell battery train to cut pollution on the Arrow corridor.

Overview

  • The ZEMU entered passenger service on Sept. 13 after roughly ten months of local testing.
  • The train operates on the 9‑mile Arrow route between downtown San Bernardino and the University of Redlands, connecting to Metrolink’s San Bernardino Line.
  • Built in Switzerland by Stadler, the unit uses hydrogen fuel‑cell and battery power with only water vapor as its emission.
  • Saturday’s debut is the first of three trains planned at about $23 million each, with contract options for additional units.
  • For now, the zero‑emission train runs alongside existing diesel multiple units, with inaugural rides offered free on Saturday.
