Norris Leads McLaren 1-2 in Red-Flagged Baku FP1

McLaren enters the weekend poised to clinch the constructors' crown following internal clarification of driver rules.

Overview

  • Lando Norris set a 1:42.704 to top FP1, 0.310 seconds ahead of championship leader Oscar Piastri, with Charles Leclerc third and George Russell fourth.
  • Running was curtailed by an approximately 25-minute red flag for a kerb problem at Turn 16, sharply limiting teams’ data gathering.
  • Oscar Piastri was called in for an early power unit issue but rejoined after repairs during the stoppage and later brushed the Turn 15 wall without significant damage.
  • Lewis Hamilton clipped the Turn 5 barrier, causing a puncture and front-wing damage, while Max Verstappen locked up and went off at Turn 15 before ending seventh.
  • McLaren can seal the constructors’ title in Baku if one driver wins and the other finishes second or third; Piastri leads Norris by 31 points as the team says its intra‑team guidelines are now clarified.
