Norovirus Outbreak Sickens 71 Passengers and One Crew Member on Royal Caribbean’s Serenade of the Seas

The case is the year’s 19th cruise gastrointestinal incident reported to the CDC, which is remotely overseeing isolation and enhanced cleaning on the Miami-bound voyage.

  • Testing confirmed norovirus after illnesses were reported to the CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program on Sept. 28.
  • The 13-night trip left San Diego on Sept. 19 and is scheduled to end in Miami on Oct. 2 after stops in Mexico, Costa Rica, the Panama Canal and Colombia.
  • About 3.8–3.9% of the 1,874 passengers and 0.1% of the 883 crew reported symptoms, primarily vomiting and diarrhea.
  • Royal Caribbean isolated sick individuals, increased cleaning and disinfection, and collected stool samples for testing in consultation with CDC officials.
  • The CDC has logged 19 cruise GI outbreaks in 2025, 14 confirmed as norovirus, surpassing 2024’s total, including earlier Royal Caribbean cases on Navigator of the Seas and Radiance of the Seas.
