Norovirus Cases Decline on Oceania Cruise as Portland Docking Proceeds

Health officials cleared the ship to dock after cases fell to single digits.

Overview

  • The outbreak on the Oceania Insignia sickened 74 of 637 passengers and one crew member during an Oct. 16–27 Montreal-to-Boston voyage.
  • CDC reported diarrhea and vomiting as the main symptoms, with only eight passengers in quarantine as of Friday afternoon.
  • Oceania activated CDC-approved measures, isolating ill travelers and intensifying cleaning and disinfection throughout the ship.
  • Portland consulted the U.S. CDC and Maine CDC, which did not advise blocking Sunday’s port call, with a Boston arrival scheduled for Monday.
  • The CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program is remotely reviewing the response, noting 20 cruise gastrointestinal outbreaks this year, including 15 confirmed as norovirus.
