Alan Shaw was dismissed as CEO of Norfolk Southern after an investigation revealed a consensual relationship with Chief Legal Officer Nabanita Nag.
Both Shaw and Nag were terminated by the board for violating the company's Code of Ethics.
Shaw's firing follows a tumultuous tenure marked by the East Palestine, Ohio train derailment in February 2023, one of the worst railroad disasters in a decade.
The board named Mark George, the current Executive VP and CFO, as Shaw's successor.
Despite the leadership change, Norfolk Southern emphasized that Shaw's firing was unrelated to the company's financial performance.
