Nor’easter Topples Buxton Beach House as Dare County Speeds Up Nourishment Plan

Officials have advanced a shoreline project to curb overwash risk after accelerating erosion left more homes vulnerable.

Overview

  • Cape Hatteras National Seashore confirmed an unoccupied Tower Circle Road home fell before sunrise Sunday, the 28th collapse on Hatteras Island since 2020.
  • The storm delivered 50–70 mph gusts, high tides and rough surf that stripped sand and undermined oceanfront structures.
  • The beach in front of Buxton is closed in places because of hazardous debris, and the Park Service is developing cleanup plans with property owners and the county.
  • Dare County Manager Bobby Outten said at least two nearby houses remain at risk and reported significant overwash at Highway 12 hotspots.
  • A fast-tracked beach nourishment project is slated to start in late spring to early summer to provide near-term protection under North Carolina’s shoreline rules.
