Nordic Catholic Church Offers Refuge to Conservative Anglicans After GAFCON Break

GAFCON has renounced Canterbury’s authority, naming a Global Anglican Communion in defense of biblical teaching.

Overview

  • Bishop Ottar Mikael Myrseth of the Nordic Catholic Church invited Church of England members to join a new fellowship described as a place of refuge.
  • His open letter rejects the legitimacy of Archbishop Sarah Mullally’s ministry on theological grounds, citing opposition to women’s ordination and her progressive views on same-sex blessings and the right to life.
  • GAFCON announced last week that it no longer recognizes the Archbishop of Canterbury and will identify as the Global Anglican Communion.
  • The movement said it cannot remain in communion with provinces pursuing a revisionist agenda that contradicts Lambeth Resolution I.10.
  • Critics have also blamed former Archbishop Justin Welby and the Communion’s instruments for failing to preserve unity and to respond to concerns from Africa and Asia.
