NORAD Says Four Aircraft Violated Norfolk TFR on Oct. 5 as Fighters Intercepted and Used Flares

The command said the signaling flares posed no risk to people on the ground.

Overview

  • NORAD reported four general aviation intrusions into FAA Temporary Flight Restriction airspace over Norfolk, Virginia, on October 5.
  • The first aircraft entered the restricted zone at about 11:55 a.m. EDT and was escorted to landing after flares drew the pilot’s attention.
  • A second aircraft entered around 12:30 p.m. EDT and was escorted out of the area shortly after.
  • Two additional aircraft entered at 4:15 p.m. and 4:46 p.m. EDT and were monitored by NORAD until they landed.
  • NORAD described the actions as part of its layered aerospace warning and control mission and urged pilots to verify FAA NOTAMs and consult the TFR website.
