NOAA Issues G3 Geomagnetic Storm Watch as Auroras Target 22 U.S. States Tonight

Forecasters warn timing and strength are uncertain as a train of CMEs tied to active region AR4274 approaches.

Overview

  • NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center has a G3 (strong) geomagnetic storm watch in effect for Nov. 6–7, with G3 conditions reported early Thursday and the main arrival window from Thursday evening into Friday morning.
  • Auroras may be visible across roughly 22 northern U.S. states from the Pacific Northwest to the Midwest and Northeast, with viewing favored between about 10 p.m. and 3 a.m. local time if skies are dark and clear.
  • Canada and the U.K. also have elevated prospects, with AuroraWatch UK issuing a red alert signaling likely visibility in Scotland and possible sightings into northern England and Northern Ireland.
  • The disturbance is driven by multiple Earth-directed coronal mass ejections following recent strong solar flares, including eruptions from solar active region AR4274.
  • NOAA forecasts peak global activity near Kp 7 late Thursday into early Friday and cautions that bright moonlight, clouds and variable solar wind conditions could limit visibility, while satellites, GPS, HF radio and power systems face elevated risk.
