No-Confidence Bid Against NI Education Minister Paul Givan Fails Under Cross-Community Rules

The SDLP moved to press for reforms to strengthen ministerial accountability after the vote.

Overview

  • Forty-seven of 80 MLAs backed the motion, but it fell because it did not achieve the required cross-community majorities, so Paul Givan remains in post.
  • The motion sought to bar Givan from ministerial office for 12 months over alleged breaches of the Pledge of Office and the Ministerial Code linked to his Israel visit and use of departmental channels.
  • Sinn Féin, the SDLP, Alliance and People Before Profit supported the move, while the DUP, UUP and TUV opposed it.
  • Givan rejected the claims as a politically motivated effort to oust a unionist minister and accused his critics of antisemitism and hypocrisy during a heated Assembly debate.
  • Following the vote, the SDLP tabled an Opposition Day motion calling for Executive and Assembly reforms to ensure more effective ministerial accountability.
