No Agreement Reached in Latest Ethiopia-Egypt Nile Dam Talks
Ethiopia insists on exploiting the river as Egypt fears devastating impact on its water supplies.
- Latest round of negotiations over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam between Ethiopia and Egypt ended without an agreement, with both countries blaming each other for the stalemate.
- Egypt, which relies on the Nile for over 90% of its water supplies, fears a devastating impact if the dam is operated without taking its needs into account.
- The dam, which began producing power last year, is expected to ultimately produce over 6,000 megawatts of electricity, doubling Ethiopia's current output and making it a net energy exporter.
- Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi and Ethiopian President Abiy Ahmed had resolved in July to come to an agreement on the dam within four months, but subsequent talks have also ended acrimoniously.
- Ethiopia has stated it will continue to exploit the river with or without an agreement.
