Overview

  • Rooney wrote in the Irish Times that she will direct UK book proceeds and BBC residuals to Palestine Action, adding that publishing such support in a British newspaper would be illegal.
  • Officials said support for a proscribed organisation is an offence under the Terrorism Act, which carries a maximum sentence of up to 14 years in prison.
  • Police report more than 700 arrests since the 5 July ban, including 522 detained at a 9 August Parliament Square protest, with at least 60 further prosecutions announced.
  • Legal experts warned the author could face arrest or prosecution in the UK if she donates to or publicly promotes the group.
  • Palestine Action was outlawed after actions including an estimated £7m of damage to aircraft at RAF Brize Norton; the group is not banned in Ireland, and the BBC said Rooney is not on its staff and that matters concerning proscribed groups are for authorities.
