NMC Revokes Vaishno Devi Medical College’s MBBS Approval After Surprise Inspection

Students will be relocated within Jammu and Kashmir as supernumerary seats to prevent academic loss.

Overview

  • The Medical Assessment and Rating Board withdrew the Letter of Permission for 50 MBBS seats with immediate effect after finding gross deficiencies in infrastructure, clinical material, faculty and resident doctors.
  • A surprise inspection on 2 January followed multiple complaints, with the regulator saying continuation would jeopardise education quality.
  • The inaugural admissions, conducted via NEET with an 85% domicile quota, included 42 Muslim students, seven Hindus and one Sikh, which prompted protests led by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Sangarsh Samiti.
  • BJP leaders welcomed the withdrawal as a quality measure, while the National Conference and Congress called it a setback for Jammu and questioned the politics around the decision.
  • J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah defended merit-based admissions earlier and later urged closing the institution and moving all enrolled students to other recognised medical colleges in the UT.
