NMC Revokes MBBS Permission for Vaishno Devi Medical College, Orders Student Relocation

A surprise inspection reported severe gaps in staffing, infrastructure, clinical material, prompting the regulator to withdraw approval.

Overview

  • MARB carried out a surprise assessment on 2 January under Section 28(7) of the NMC Act following multiple complaints about the new college.
  • Inspectors found a 39% deficiency in teaching faculty, a 65% shortage of tutors and residents, OPD and bed occupancy near 45–50%, and missing laboratories and essential facilities.
  • NMC directed Jammu and Kashmir authorities to place all 2025–26 MBBS entrants into other recognised UT medical colleges as supernumerary seats, ensuring no student loses a seat.
  • The action comes after weeks of protests over an inaugural class dominated by Muslim students (reported 42 of 50), with BJP and the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Sangharsh Samiti welcoming the decision as opposition leaders warned against communalising admissions.
  • College officials contested the findings and timing of the visit, while regional reports indicated the institute’s performance or bank guarantee could be forfeited as part of the regulatory action.
