NMC Revokes MBBS Permission for Vaishno Devi College as J&K CM Pledges to Place 50 Students

The regulator cites serious shortfalls found in a surprise inspection, drawing procedural and political objections.

Overview

  • J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said the UT will create supernumerary seats to relocate the inaugural batch of 50 MBBS students to nearby government colleges.
  • The NMC’s Medical Assessment and Rating Board withdrew the Letter of Permission after a January 2 inspection flagged gaps in faculty strength, clinical material and infrastructure.
  • Faculty and students dispute the findings and allege the decision bypassed due process, saying a show-cause notice and chance to rectify were not provided.
  • The action follows weeks of protests by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Sangharsh Samiti and allied groups over a first cohort largely comprising Kashmiri Muslim students admitted on NEET merit.
  • Hindu nationalist organisations, including the VHP, welcomed the revocation on religious grounds, while Abdullah urged accountability from the university leadership, including the Chancellor.
