NMC Makes ABHA-ID Registration and Faculty Sign-Off Mandatory in Teaching Hospitals

Only ABHA-ID–authenticated patient records will count for future academic assessments under the 75 percent occupancy rule with the commission stepping up audits and penalties.

Overview

  • The NMC’s latest directive requires every patient admitted to a teaching hospital to be registered with an Ayushman Bharat Health Account ID.
  • Teaching faculty and senior residents must sign off on all inpatient entries and department heads must authenticate diagnostic reports.
  • From the 2025–26 academic year onward, only admissions verified with the digital health ID will contribute to the mandatory 75 percent bed-occupancy calculation.
  • The commission will conduct verification audits and impose sanctions on institutions and staff for any falsified patient records, though care cannot be withheld for lack of an ID.
  • The ABHA ID, a 14-digit unique identifier under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, consolidates medical history and can be created easily using an Aadhaar card.
