NMC Clears 10,650 MBBS Seats and 41 New Colleges, Taking India’s Total to 137,600

The regulator now turns to a PG seat expansion, with accreditation schedules plus the 2025–26 application portal next.

Overview

  • The approvals raise the MBBS seat tally to 137,600 and lift the number of medical colleges to 816, following applications from both government and private institutions.
  • For postgraduate training, the NMC has logged over 3,500 applications and expects about 5,000 additional PG seats, taking capacity to roughly 67,000 and pushing the overall UG–PG increase this year to around 15,000.
  • Officials said a blueprint covering accreditation, examinations, and the seat-matrix schedule will be published shortly, with the 2025–26 application portal slated for early November.
  • All appeals against Medical Assessment and Rating Board decisions were settled without court intervention, which NMC leadership described as a first in recent years.
  • Recent counselling milestones include NEET UG round 3 results released on October 18 with reporting underway and NEET PG round 1 registration opening the same day, as the commission also explores integrating clinical research into curricula with planned ICMR collaboration.
