NMC Assesses Complaints Against Darlington Nurses Over Changing Room Dispute

The four nurses say they were moved to temporary facilities after objecting to changing alongside a trans-identifying colleague.

Overview

  • The Nursing and Midwifery Council has written to the nurses confirming it is gathering information to decide whether to open a full misconduct investigation after four public complaints.
  • Bethany Hutchison, Lisa Lockey, Annice Grundy and Tracey Hooper objected to sharing a women’s changing room with colleague Rose Henderson, who identifies as female and has not undergone hormonal or surgical transition.
  • The nurses have lodged a tribunal claim alleging sexual harassment and discrimination against County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust, with a hearing scheduled later this month.
  • Their legal team at the Christian Legal Centre argues the complaints are ideologically driven and that the nurses acted lawfully under the Equality Act 2010 and the Human Rights Act.
  • Shadow minister Claire Coutinho criticized the process and urged Health Secretary Wes Streeting to intervene, as NMC cases can take years and carry significant professional consequences.
