Overview
- The Turnpike Authority asked Tesla to decommission 64 Supercharger stalls on June 2 under a new sole-provider contract with Applegreen Electric.
- Applegreen’s universal chargers, compatible with all EV models, will begin operating June 6 at Vince Lombardi, Woodrow Wilson, Richard Stockton, James Fenimore Cooper, Joyce Kilmer and Walt Whitman service areas.
- Tesla had offered above-market terms to upgrade existing stalls for non-Tesla EVs and to co-locate with other networks, but NJTA declined the proposal.
- In anticipation of removal, Tesla installed 116 new Supercharger stalls off the Turnpike and set its trip planner to reroute drivers to those locations.
- The move has drawn criticism from Tesla CEO Elon Musk and prompted concerns among drivers and state officials over impacts on New Jersey’s EV adoption goals.
