Overview
- The NJ Turnpike Authority has asked Tesla to remove 64 Superchargers and will start installing Applegreen Electric’s universal open-access stations at six service areas on June 6.
- Under an amended contract, Applegreen Electric will add 80 EV ports by the end of this year and expand to 240 total charging ports on the Turnpike by April 2033.
- Tesla’s proposal to co-locate and upgrade its Superchargers for all EV models was rejected, leading the company to build 116 new stalls off the Turnpike in anticipation of the change.
- Tesla warns that removing its 99.9%-uptime, low-congestion network could undermine New Jersey’s goal of 100% zero-emission new car sales by 2035.
- Elon Musk tweeted “Sounds like corruption,” while the Turnpike Authority says it is simply consolidating under a single open-access charging provider.
