NJ Transit Cancels Gas-Fired Power Plant Plan

Federal funds to be redirected to other resiliency projects across New Jersey

  • NJ Transit has scrapped plans for a gas-fired backup power plant in Kearny, a decision that has been welcomed by environmental justice advocates.
  • The agency will redirect the $503 million in federal funding initially allocated for the project to other resiliency projects across northern and central New Jersey.
  • The decision was made after an intensive review of industry proposals revealed the project was not financially feasible.
  • The cancellation of the project has led to renewed calls for a similar plan at the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission in Newark to be scrapped.
  • The funds will now be used for the replacement of a bridge over the Raritan River, upgrades to the Hoboken Rail Terminal, and the expansion of a rail storage yard in New Brunswick.
