NJ Transit Begins Five-Week Service Shift for Final Portal North Bridge Track Move

The concentrated operation will place the last track on the new fixed-span bridge so trains stop waiting for openings and agencies can complete safety testing.

Overview

  • NJ Transit began the concentrated work on Sunday, Oct. 11, and says regular Midtown-Direct service should resume about Nov. 15 after the track transfer and safety testing are finished.
  • Weekday trains on the Morris & Essex, Gladstone Branch and Montclair-Boonton that normally go to New York Penn Station will instead terminate at Hoboken during the work.
  • Riders rerouted to Hoboken can use PATH, NY Waterway ferries or NJ Transit buses with cross-honored tickets to reach Manhattan and supplemental express trains are being added to handle demand.
  • Amtrak has cut some frequencies on the Northeast Corridor to take advantage of reduced traffic and will use the window to complete up to eight maintenance projects.
  • The $2.3 billion Portal North Bridge is a fixed higher-span replacement for the 1910 drawbridge that should stop openings for ship traffic from causing repeated delays and affect roughly 30,000 weekday Midtown-Direct riders.
