NJ Governor Phil Murphy to Appoint George Helmy as Interim Senator

Helmy will serve the remainder of Bob Menendez's term following Menendez's resignation after a federal bribery conviction.

George Helmy, former chief of staff to Gov. Murphy, will fill the Senate seat until January.
Menendez resigned after being convicted on 16 counts, including bribery and acting as a foreign agent.
Helmy's appointment bypasses Democratic nominee Andy Kim, who is favored to win the November election.
Helmy has a background in New Jersey politics, having worked with Senators Cory Booker and Frank Lautenberg.
Menendez's sentencing is scheduled for late October, shortly before the election.
