Overview
- The band, which accepted the Video Vanguard lifetime-achievement award on Sunday, Sept. 27, 2026, appeared at the VMAs in Los Angeles with bassist Krist Novoselic, drummer Dave Grohl and touring guitarist Pat Smear on stage together.
- Public Enemy frontman Chuck D presented the honor and introduced a video montage of Nirvana’s defining clips, including footage from “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” “In Bloom,” “Heart-Shaped Box” and an MTV Unplugged performance.
- Novoselic delivered the acceptance remarks, repeatedly crediting Kurt Cobain for the ideas behind the band’s videos and calling Cobain “one of one,” while Grohl did not speak during the presentation.
- The trio did not perform; onstage moments included Pat Smear lighting a cigarette and no appearance by Courtney Love or Frances Bean Cobain.
- The award is being read as a formal institutional recognition of Nirvana’s long-running influence on music-video culture, and it arrives the same year MTV removed a rock category from the show and as the first rock band to win the Vanguard since Duran Duran in 2003.
