Nirmala Sitharaman Begins Four-Day Bhutan Visit to Deepen Economic Ties

Overview

  • The finance minister departed on October 30 for a visit running through November 2 while leading an Indian delegation from the Department of Economic Affairs.
  • She is scheduled to call on King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay, and hold a bilateral meeting with Finance Minister Lekey Dorji.
  • Her itinerary includes site visits to Indian-supported projects such as the Kurichhu Hydropower Plant, the Gyalsung Academy, the Sangchen Choekhor Monastery and the Punakha Dzong.
  • She will attend presentations on Bhutan’s energy sector by Druk Green Power Corporation, the 21st Century Economic Roadmap, banking briefings by Druk PNB and the Bank of Bhutan, and the Gelephu Mindfulness City project.
  • Plans feature a demonstration of a UPI transaction at the Cottage and Small Industries Market and an interaction with farmers on the route to Punakha, with formal outcomes yet to be announced.
