NIRF 2025: IIT Madras Leads Overall as Jadavpur Tops State Public Universities

Overview

  • IIT Madras retained the No. 1 spot in the overall category, followed by IISc Bengaluru, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi and IIT Kanpur, as the Ministry of Education released the rankings in New Delhi.
  • Jadavpur University led the State Public Universities list ahead of Anna University and Panjab University, with Andhra University at No. 4, Kerala University and CUSAT at 5 and 6, and Gauhati University climbing to 9.
  • Kerala reported broad gains including Kerala University and CUSAT entering the state‑public top six and 74 colleges from the state featuring in the national top‑300 list.
  • Panjab University improved across categories, rising to third among state publics, advancing to 35th among universities and entering the SDG 11–50 band while maintaining 11–50 in innovation.
  • Savitribai Phule Pune University fell to 91 overall from 37 last year, citing faculty retirements and NEP‑driven enrolment for a weaker faculty–student ratio, and it has launched hiring to recover; IGNOU led the open universities list ahead of Karnataka State Open University and UP Rajarshi Tandon Open University.
