Overview

  • Nippon Steel and Vestas signed a memorandum of understanding to supply tower steel from Nippon Steel’s Kimitsu and Oita works for Vestas’ wind towers in Europe, Asia and Japan.
  • Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and Vestas have formed a study group to assess local turbine manufacturing and integrate it into the domestic supply chain.
  • The partnerships support Japan’s targets of achieving 10 GW of offshore wind by 2030 and up to 45 GW by 2040 as part of its net-zero emissions by 2050 plan.
  • These agreements complement earlier METI frameworks with Siemens Gamesa and GE Vernova that aim to foster public–private collaboration in wind power and related technologies.
  • Localizing steel production and turbine assembly is intended to reduce reliance on imported components and address cost and delay issues that stalled prior offshore wind auctions.
