Nintendo to Shut Down Online Services for 3DS and Wii U Systems on April 8, 2024

Single-Player Modes to Remain Functional; Pokémon Bank and Poké Transporter Exempt from Shutdown

  • Nintendo has announced that it will shut down online services for its 3DS and Wii U systems on April 8, 2024, at 7 AM ET, ending online multiplayer gaming and other internet-based features on these platforms.
  • Despite the shutdown, single-player modes and games will continue to function on both platforms, and users will still be able to download updates and previously purchased games.
  • Two exceptions to the shutdown are the Pokémon Bank and Poké Transporter features, which will remain available for the time being.
  • Nintendo 3DS and Wii U system owners have until 1 AM ET on March 12, 2024, to merge their Nintendo Account and Nintendo Network ID, allowing them to use any leftover money to buy Nintendo Switch games and other digital content.
  • Nintendo's decision to end these services reflects the dwindling user base of these older systems and the company's focus on its newer platform, the Nintendo Switch.
