Nintendo Reportedly Weighing a Switch 2 OLED Revision

Industry sources say the company is studying a rigid FHD OLED panel but rising component costs could decide whether the plan moves forward.

Overview

  • ZDNet Korea reported Tuesday that multiple unnamed industry insiders told it Nintendo is considering a Switch 2 model with a rigid OLED display and that Samsung Display is a likely supplier.
  • Those sources say product development could begin late in 2026 with mass production not expected before late 2027 or early 2028 if Nintendo approves the change.
  • Outlets note the OLED unit would keep the Switch 2’s full HD (1920×1080) handheld resolution while adding OLED benefits such as deeper contrast, faster response and stronger HDR performance to address LCD complaints like ghosting and input lag.
  • Analysts and reports warn cost is the main hurdle because OLED panels and current memory/storage price pressures would raise manufacturing costs on top of a recent Switch 2 price increase that pushed the base model higher.
  • Nintendo has not confirmed any OLED plan and continues to only announce a separate, official European hardware revision that adds a replaceable battery to meet regional rules.
