Nintendo Announces Live-Action Zelda Movie; Wes Ball to Direct

Film to be produced by Shigeru Miyamoto and Avi Arad and developed at Sony Studio; in speculation phase for sourcing from various games including "Breath of the Wild" and "Ocarina of Time".

  • Nintendo has announced a live-action movie based on the 'Legend of Zelda' series. The film is to be directed by Wes Ball, known for the 'Maze Runner' trilogy, and is currently in the development phase at Sony Studios.
  • Producers Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo and Avi Arad, involved with 'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse', speculate that the film might source from various 'Zelda' games such as 'Breath of the Wild' and 'Ocarina of Time'.
  • Differing views on which 'Zelda' game should form the basis of the film have surfaced, with 'Breath of the Wild', 'Ocarina of Time', 'Majora’s Mask', 'The Wind Waker', 'Spirit Tracks' and even the 1989 'Legend of Zelda' TV show being suggested.
  • The live-action film, whilst expected to include many references across the Zelda franchise, is also being seen as an opportunity to reboot the gaming franchise with fresh, never-seen-before content.
  • Despite initial social media uproar about the choice of Wes Ball as director, industry experts have defended the decision, pointing out Ball’s aptitude in successfully creating a sense of scope, grandeur and world-exploration through his work, well-suited for the adventure-focused ethos of 'The Legend of Zelda'.
