Nintendo Adds User-Replaceable Batteries to Select Hardware

Compliance with new European battery rules will be achieved by adding user-replaceable cells.

Overview

  • Nintendo announced revisions to multiple products that insert user-replaceable batteries and said revised units will roll out on a staggered schedule from summer 2026 through early 2027.
  • The company provided revised specs for key items: the Switch 2 now lists a 5172mAh battery and an approximate weight of 411g, Joy-Con 2 batteries show no capacity change with minor weight increases, and the Switch 2 Pro Controller lists 897mAh and a lighter weight.
  • Nintendo said there will be no functional differences between current models and revised units and that Joy-Con 2 controllers included with Switch 2 will also have user-replaceable batteries.
  • Battery replacement kits for each revised product will be sold through the Nintendo Store in Europe, and Nintendo warned that exact timing and retail availability will vary by country and retailer.
  • The move is meant to meet European rules taking effect in early 2027 and to increase on-device repairability, though some revised batteries are slightly smaller in capacity which could have a modest impact on run times.
