Nintendo Adds Docked VRR to Switch 2 in 23.0.0 Update

The feature is meant to reduce tearing and stutter on compatible TVs but requires a Dock firmware update and developer-enabled support for each game.

Overview

  • Nintendo released system update Version 23.0.0 on Thursday to add Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) output in TV/docked mode for the Switch 2 and also applied the update to the original Switch.
  • Users must update the Nintendo Switch 2 Dock firmware through console settings and use a VRR-capable TV and HDMI cable before any docked VRR will appear.
  • Docked VRR activates on a title-by-title whitelist rather than system-forcing VRR, and only the Welcome Tour demo is reported patched and working at launch.
  • Early technical tests from Digital Foundry report strong low-framerate compensation (LFC) at 120Hz and 40–60Hz behavior at 60Hz, but reviewers found a quirk that forces VRR on when enabled even for games that do not support it.
  • The update also adds full Switch 2-to-Switch 2 system transfer, a Quick Settings toggle for Handheld Mode Boost, Virtual Game Card online-license fallback, Mii editor enhancements, and expanded accessibility language support.
