Nine-year-old dies after slipping into River Thames at Gravesend

Authorities will prepare a coroner’s report following the recovery of her body from the Thames.

Overview

  • Bia, aged nine, slipped into the Thames near Royal Terrace Pier in Gravesend at about 1:40 pm on May 30 while playing with her seven-year-old cousin.
  • A seven-year-old boy was also pulled from the water and remains in stable condition at a local hospital.
  • Kent Police marine units, the RNLI, HM Coastguard and a coastguard helicopter led a search that recovered Bia’s body at 11:40 am on May 31.
  • Police have confirmed the death is not suspicious and will submit a report to the coroner.
  • Bia’s family, reportedly from Romania, described her as a “beautiful angel” in social media tributes and Gravesham MP Dr. Lauren Sullivan extended her condolences.
