Nine Philadelphia Officers Charged Over Youth Boxing Grant Payments

The case stems from an Internal Affairs probe that found officers were paid by a city-backed boxing program during their on-duty hours.

Overview

  • Philadelphia prosecutors filed felony counts including conspiracy, theft by unlawful taking and theft by deception after a joint investigation that began in 2023.
  • Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel suspended five active-duty officers for 30 days with intent to dismiss following the charges.
  • Those charged include program founder and former captain Nashid Akil, former officers George Gee, Robyn Gee and LaCarmela Fortune, and active-duty officers Brittanie Crockett, Daniel Moll, Janae McDonald, Mark DiGenio and Michael Minor.
  • Investigators say the officers collected payments from the Guns Down, Gloves Up program while also receiving city salaries, in some cases during work hours.
  • The funds came from the Community Expansion Grant program that used federal stimulus dollars, and prior reporting documented more than $75,000 paid to police staff and portions of participant payments going to relatives as the inquiry continues.
