Nine Killed, 32 Injured in Accidental Blast at Nowgam Police Station During Explosives Sampling

Authorities attribute the detonation to forensic handling of volatile Faridabad-linked explosives connected to the Red Fort investigation.

Overview

  • DGP Nalin Prabhat and MHA official Prashant Lokhande said the 11:20 pm Friday explosion was accidental during evidence sampling and urged against speculation.
  • The dead include three Forensic Science Laboratory personnel, two crime-scene photographers, two revenue officials, a State Investigation Agency inspector and a tailor assisting the team.
  • Officials said the team had been sampling for two days from a 360 kg cache seized in Faridabad from accused doctor Muzammil Ganaie, which was transported to Srinagar as case property.
  • Successive smaller blasts hampered immediate rescue as the station building was heavily damaged, vehicles caught fire and nearby structures were affected.
  • Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha ordered a probe, NIA involvement has been initiated or reported, and CCTV footage capturing the moment of the blast has been reviewed by investigators.
