Nine Killed, 32 Hurt in Accidental Blast at Srinagar’s Nowgam Police Station

Officials say the detonation occurred during forensic sampling of explosives seized from a Faridabad-linked terror probe tied to the Red Fort car explosion.

Overview

  • The blast struck around 11:20 pm as FSL teams handled part of a roughly 360 kg cache, including ammonium nitrate, recovered from the rented residence of arrested doctor Muzammil Ganaie in Faridabad.
  • The dead include three FSL personnel, two revenue officials (including a Naib Tehsildar), two crime-scene photographers, one State Investigation Agency inspector and a tailor; 27 police personnel, two revenue staff and three civilians were injured.
  • J&K DGP Nalin Prabhat and MHA’s Prashant Lokhande termed the incident accidental, urged against speculation and said inquiries are underway, noting small successive explosions initially slowed rescue efforts.
  • The cache being sampled is part of a wider ‘white-collar’ module probe involving Al-Falah University-linked doctors and alleged JeM ties, with investigators connecting the network to the Red Fort car blast and national agencies engaged.
  • Officials said the seized materials were transported by truck to Nowgam as case property under FIR 162/2025 and stored in an open area at the station, which was heavily damaged along with nearby structures.
