Nine Chinese and Russian Warplanes Briefly Enter South Korea’s Air Defense Zone

The flights fit a recurring pattern of joint exercise activity that South Korea monitors by scrambling jets.

Overview

  • South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said two Chinese aircraft and seven Russian planes successively entered the KADIZ at around 10 a.m.
  • The Republic of Korea Air Force dispatched fighter jets as a precaution in case of an accidental situation.
  • The aircraft did not violate sovereign airspace, and the military said it detected them before they entered the identification zone.
  • The planes, including bombers and fighters, intermittently moved in and out over waters east and south of the peninsula for about an hour before retreating.
  • Such entries typically occur once or twice a year during China–Russia exercises without prior notice, with the last similar case involving 11 planes in November last year.
