NIMS Reaches 1,000 Robotic Surgeries in Under Three Years

Providing most procedures free under state schemes demonstrates that public hospitals can deliver high-end robotic care.

Overview

  • The Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences in Hyderabad announced it has completed 1,000 robotic-assisted operations since launching and scaling the service over the past three years.
  • The caseload is led by urology with 590 procedures, followed by surgical gastroenterology with 248 and surgical oncology with 162, according to the institute.
  • More than 90% of the procedures were provided free to patients through government schemes such as Aarogyasri and the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund, lowering financial barriers to advanced surgery.
  • The programme has handled complex work including radical prostatectomy, radical cystectomy, robotic renal transplantation, hepatobiliary and pancreatic resections, using robotic systems to reduce incision size, blood loss and hospital stay.
  • NIMS credited multidisciplinary teams and state support for the scale-up and said the milestone positions the institute as a public centre of excellence and a model for expanding advanced surgical services.
