Nikki Haley, former South Carolina governor and current Republican presidential candidate, has sparked controversy by stating that America is not a racist country and has never been one.
Haley's comments were made during an interview on Fox & Friends, following her third-place finish in the Iowa caucuses.
Critics have pointed out that Haley's denial of America's racist past contradicts her own experiences of racism growing up in South Carolina, as well as the country's history of slavery, segregation, and ongoing racial disparities.
Haley has previously been criticized for failing to mention slavery as a cause of the Civil War during a campaign event in December.
Despite the backlash, Haley maintains that her goal is to 'lift up everybody' and not divide people based on race or gender.
