Nighttime Rescue Saves Two Massachusetts Skiers Lost on Mount Moosilauke in Blizzard Conditions

Rescuers located the pair using a snowmobile approach followed by a deep-snow hike.

Overview

  • New Hampshire Fish and Game and Pemigewasset Valley Search and Rescue staged in Warren to coordinate the response.
  • Teams rode snowmobiles about four miles up Old Carriage Road, then hiked roughly 1.5 miles through thick trees to a drainage.
  • The skiers reported losing the trail in strong winds and near-zero visibility, were stuck in waist-deep snow, and had about 2% phone battery with no warm or light gear.
  • Rescuers reached them around 11 p.m. and spent over an hour getting them back onto the trail before escorting them to the snowmobiles.
  • The men were identified as Romain Tronchi, 30, of Cambridge, and Gabriel Mahe, 32, of Somerville, and officials reported no injuries with everyone back by about 2 a.m.
