Night Helicopter Winch Rescues Two 23-Year-Old Hikers From Tyrol’s Bärenkopf in -14 C

Rescuers reported the hikers were lightly hypothermic after being lifted off at about 1,880 meters.

Overview

  • The pair from Germany’s Aschaffenburg district called emergency services after stopping on a steep slope during a crossing as darkness approached.
  • They had started with friends in Pertisau and, after the group ended the tour at Bärenbadalm, continued toward the Bärenkopf but were slowed by snow and difficult route-finding, with reports indicating up to about 30 centimeters of snow on parts of the route.
  • Emergency dispatch activated a night-capable rescue helicopter and Bergrettung Maurach, and ARA Flugrettung with RK-2 Reutte carried out the winch recovery.
  • The extraction occurred around 18:05 at about 1,880 meters with temperatures near -14 C, according to police.
  • The helicopter set them down in Maurach, where mountain rescue and the alpine police took over, and both were assessed as lightly hypothermic with no serious injuries reported.
