Night Helicopter Hoist Rescues Two 23-Year-Old Hikers in Tyrol

Heavy snow with a steep traverse left the pair calling for help.

Overview

  • The duo from Germany’s Aschaffenburg district was extracted at about 1,880 meters as temperatures neared −14 °C.
  • The RK-2 team from Reutte performed the winch rescue using ARA Flugrettung’s night-capable operation in rugged terrain.
  • They had set out from Pertisau’s Karwendelbahn, reached Bärenbadalm with friends, then continued toward Bärenkopf on their own.
  • Up to roughly 30 centimeters of snow and difficult route-finding slowed progress until fear halted them on a steep slope.
  • After the hoist, they were set down in Maurach am Achensee with mild hypothermia and handed to Bergrettung and the alpine police.
