Nigeria Deports 102 Foreigners Convicted in Lagos Cyber-Fraud Crackdown

EFCC targets transnational romance-crypto schemes run from Victoria Island hubs.

Overview

  • The agency said 60 Chinese and 39 Filipino nationals were removed after convictions for cyber-terrorism and internet fraud.
  • Spokesman Dele Oyewale told AFP that a further 39 Filipinos, 10 Chinese and two Kazakh nationals have also been deported since August 15.
  • The deportees were swept up in a December operation in Lagos that arrested 792 suspects, at least 192 of them foreigners, the EFCC said.
  • Photos released by the EFCC showed masked deportees queued at airport check-in counters as the agency signaled more removals were scheduled.
  • Investigators say foreign-run syndicates recruit local accomplices to lure victims—mainly in the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Europe—into phishing and fake cryptocurrency investments.
