Nielsen Cuts Public Lag on Streaming Charts to About Two Weeks

Paying clients now receive daily streaming data, giving them sharper audience signals that may prompt more selective public disclosures.

Overview

  • Nielsen announced Thursday that it shortened the public reporting delay for its weekly Streaming Content Ratings from roughly four weeks to about 11–14 days, delivering more timely rankings to the industry.
  • As part of the change Nielsen began supplying paying clients with daily streaming figures while continuing to keep daily numbers private unless a client chooses to release them.
  • To align the new cadence Nielsen published three weeks of data at once covering Aug. 17 through Sept. 6 and the most recent weekly chart for Aug. 31–Sept. 6 showed Prime Video’s Reacher as the top title with about 1.2 billion minutes watched.
  • Nielsen’s ratings still measure only U.S. viewing on television sets and aggregate minutes across seasons, which means totals can include catch-up viewing of earlier episodes.
  • Nielsen called the update its most significant Streaming Content Ratings enhancement since 2017 and the faster data could alter short-term marketing, programming and publicity choices as outlets and platforms respond to nearer-term audience signals.
